The European Diploma in Internal Medicine (EDIM) is offered by the European Board of
Internal Medicine (EBIM). The Diploma is a collaboration between the European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM) and the Union of European Medical Specialists (UEMS), Section of Internal Medicine in partnership with the Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom. Through this partnership the European Board has access to professional expertise with experience of delivering high quality, reliable examinations. For a period of three years (2006-2008), the Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom and the European Board have agreed that the MRCP(UK) Part 2 Written Examination will be the written examination needed to achieve EDIM.
The written examination for achieving the European Diploma in Internal Medicine will be held 9-10 April 2008.
You may sit the exam in Athens, Istanbul, London or Prague. Other locations may be available for subsequent exams depending on the demand.
Download the Application form, list of Local Co-ordinators and Template for letter of approval from National Societies.
Eligibility
The EDIM Examination will be restricted to residents in Internal Medicine who have completed or are in the last two years of their National training programmes, and currently hold posts in areas covered by EFIM or UEMS. All applications from candidates must be therefore be approved by their National Societies. Accordingly, a letter of approval signed by the President or Secretary General of each candidate’s National Society this must accompany all applications (a format has been circulated to EFIM National Society contacts). Candidates may sit the written examination during their last two years of training, but will not be awarded the European Diploma until training is completed and a certificate of this has been presented by the National Society. For UK applicants, Record of In Training Assessment (RITA) reports and training numbers will be required when requesting the Letter of Approval from the UK Co-ordinator (Dr Clare Higgens).
Status
Although the EDIM has no legal status, it should be considered a proof of competence as a European Specialist in Internal Medicine which complements other assessments of competence by their National Societies. The European Board recommends that the National Societies use this validated test to document specialist knowledge by European Standards in Internal Medicine. EBIM encourages the National Societies to use additional test formats to assess other components of professional competence, as a complement to this knowledge-based test, when developing their own qualification assessments. It is the ambition of EBIM to give support to the introduction of such test formats.
Test format
The written examination is identical to the MRCP(UK) Part 2 Written Examination and consists of three papers, each lasting three hours, given over two days. It is a multiple choice question format with a total of 270 questions. Examples of questions will be available at the EFIM website.
Practical arrangements
The written examination will be held in four European cities (Athens, Istanbul, London, and Prague) twice a year,
at the same time as the MRCP(UK) Part 2 Written Examination.
The written examination will be marked by the MRCP(UK) Central Office.
The MRCP(UK) Central Office will employ the services of the British Council in each city to act on their behalf for
duties relating to the conduct and organization of the written examination.
The (4th) written examination will be held 9-10 April 2008.
The Application form is available from the EFIM website
www.efim.org.
Applications should be submitted no earlier than 4 weeks prior to the closing date of 1 February 2008.
The application must be sent by surface/air mail to Lorie Hultgen at the EBIM Administration Office: Dept of Medicine, University Hospital MAS, Entrance 33, S-205 02 Malmö, Sweden together with a printed copy of the bank transaction fee of 450 Euros.
Completion of EDIM
After passing the written examination, a candidate with previously specified documentation from the National society (completed specialist training, entitled to practise, current post) will have the Diploma formally conferred. All arrangements to confer the award of EDIM will be handled by EBIM.
